Recommendations

-The Ugly Truth. Got bad reviews but it's entertaining enough, especially if you love Katherine Heigl, which I do. I didn't realize it was rated R so it was raunchier than I though it would be.
-The Princess Academy by Shannon Hale is a book that given the title and the cover sounds really dumb. But it's actually really really good- I read it in one night. I actually love all of Shannon Hale's young adult books, they always have strong female characters, lots of action and good plot, and a satisfying romance.
-Penelope is a movie I watched for like the 3rd time on Starz the other morning. It's this fairy tale type movie with Christina Ricci and James McAvoy (you probably know that I love him) and it's pretty fun.

Numbers

1) Went to Harry Potter midnight show. My friends and I watched the first and part of the third movie (they were so cute in the first one!) before heading over to the theater around 7:30ish, where there was already a line around the outside. We played UNO on the hot pavement for a couple hours before the line finally started moving. Then we got great seats and sat inside for a couple more hours. Air conditioning is great. The movie itself was really good. Well, I thought the romances were good and the kiss was a bit disappointing, but overall it was pretty fun and I've seen it twice, so that tells you something.
2) Trying not to be lazy. Well, enjoying being lazy but I do need to start getting things together for China. I am bringing only one backpack and one suitcase so I am trying to bring everything I need but as little as possible.
3) Reading. Seems like I've been reading a lot but I guess not really. So far I reread HP 6-7, which was great- JK Rowling is so brilliant! I can't believe she had that plot in mind since the beginning- crazy. I read The Scarlet Pimpernel which I recommend, it was really good! French Revolution, Reign of Terror historical setting and swashbuckling hero, with some good twists. I still need to finish the 4th book of Twilight, which I just couldn't bring myself to do because the middle part with Jacob's narration got real boring. Also reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, which is good but I haven't picked it up lately.

Still trying to figure out the blogging situation for China since so many websites are blocked a lot of the time. I might just do a blogger since you can update by email, which I could do if necessary.

California Love

Last weekend was my weekend getaway to California. My friend from two summers of Girl Scout Camp, Syd (her real name is Kristie, we all have camp names) was going to be in the States from Australia along with her friend. So Steph and I road tripped to Anaheim early Friday morning to pick up Syd and Emma from Disneyland. We then met up with my friend Thomas from study abroad, and went to a mall, then to Newport and the beach. We had milkshakes at a Ruby's over the ocean. It was great to see Thomas and catch up, and weird that the last time we hung out was in Hong Kong.

After that we took a nice drive to San Diego, with an ocean view. We checked into the glamorous Super 8 and met up with Katie, who is living and working in SD and hasn't been home to Arizona. We went to the Hotel Del Coronado, an old Victorian style beach hotel. Now I love Coronado, it's like my second home since my family vacationed there every July for the whole month, for about 10 years in a row. It was great to be back and beautiful, as always. We had perfect beach weather on Saturday. After we visited Balboa Park, which has lots of sights to see, we ate at a Mexican restaurant in Old Town. I love me my Mexican food, and appreciate it all the more since East Coast Mexican seriously sucks. We went back to Coronado for the beach. I love the beach more than I can say, and spent the whole time body surfing and swimming in the ocean. I don't think I'll ever get sick of the beach.

Since we were pretty tired we went to the mall to see a movie that evening- it cost $11.50, I almost died- and saw The Proposal, which I was totally surprised that I loved. I even saw it again this week. Sunday we went to Seaport Village, a beach side shopping area. There was a marathon going on and also some tropical birds hanging out. And of course we got Ben and Jerry's ice cream. After that I left off Syd and Emma at the Mormon temple before saying goodbye and heading home. On the drive home we stopped in Dateland, which is a bunch of date trees and one building that has date shakes, which were suprisingly good.

Overall it was a really fun trip and made me realize how much I miss California. The weather was gorgeous and the ocean was gorgeous.

June was apparently the coolest June here in since 1913, and it was lovely for most of the month- mostly surpisingly pleasant nights. Then it started to get hot, and now it is weirdly humid- grey humid days and over 100 temperatures is the grossest combination.

Club GC

Just got back from my Grand Canyon trip this weekend. Amy, Christin and I headed up to Flagstaff on Friday. Flagstaff is a city town-ish place in the mountains of Northern Arizona. There are some chill places there and it has a university. We were staying with Stephanie, who just got her apartment there. Friday we ate an early dinner, my favorite kind, and hung out with Brook, who as it turns out lives in the same complex as Stephanie.
We headed out to the Grand Canyon at 7:30 (ugh!), which was about 90 minutes from Flag. It was relatively crowded. I love going to those touristy places because there are so many people from everywhere- I heard everything from foreign accents to Southern accents (which I love). Plus everyone is really friendly. We wanted to hike since we'd all at least looked at the GC before, so we headed to a trail that went into the canyon. As it turns out, Amy and Steph like to run downhill into giant canyons (well, walk way fast) so Christin and I went at what I would define as a normal pace. Going down is hard on your legs, and scary because you can definitely slip- and there's the canyon right there, it's not like there's much space between the trail and the precipice. We went a bit farther than I would have liked (I mean, it all kind of looks the same after a while and no way we'd make it to the river), and then we had to go the only way out- back up. Christin and I thought we were going to die. Not only is it steep, and the desert, but the altitude is killer when your body is working that hard. We made it, and I'm proud. I'm glad I pushed myself but I think it was a bit much for me, I still feel like I got run over by a truck.
We took a break and walked around the Rim Trail, which we did a mile of before calling it a day. It's a flat (thank goodness), paved trail that goes around the rim (duh?). It has some nice views, and was pretty empty so it was a fun, short hike.
I was pretty spent so we went to Galaxy Diner, a place off of Route 66, that is the Americana diner where I would take foreign friends if they were in town, they love that stuff. After that we saw Angels and Demons for a chill activity.
Headed back today. I'm pretty sore and ready to veg.

Sedona

Today my friend Christin and I hit the road for a romantic getaway to Red Rock Country. On our way we stopped at Chino Bandito for lunch, which is that's right, Mexican and Chinese. It was really good, I had both a Chinese chicken dish and a burrito. Then we headed up to Sedona, which was a pretty nice drive. The rocks started to be tinged red, and we were there. We stopped at a scenic area and went on a mini-hike- well, as much as I could in flip-flops. We drove around a bit. Sedona is a cool hippie-dippie town, apparently the rocks have good psychic vibes so there is a lot of psychic/mystic/spiritual stuff. It's refreshing to go somewhere that doesn't just have chain stores. The houses and buildings are all very unique, gorgeous, and all very Sedona. Lots of red adobe and glass.

The original reason we went it that they have the Sedona film festival, and today they showed 500 Days of Summer early ($5 for students). It's an indie film that is in danger of pretentiousness, but it's sense of humor and creativity saves it from that. I liked it, and would recommend.

A couple pictures will follow on Facebook.
