After an intriguing Murder Mystery Dinner Party called Bullets n Barbecue (yes, high school friends, this is like what we did that one year in high school where every party was a murder mystery), I have been considering some large life questions.
Well, I got rejected from the Baltimore Teaching Fellowship (sort of saw that coming), and so far I have one interview, my big trip to Nashville for the teaching fellowship there, which I'm quite excited about. But this is my only interview, and i have to say, most jobs that I am trying to seek out seem super competitive, or utterly horribly unappealing.
I don't want to sit at a desk shuffling papers, be a poorly paid intern or whatnot. I guess you could say that everyone has crappy jobs they hate and has to work their way up or whatever...but I dunno. Maybe I'm crazy but I believe you do have some choice in the matter. More and more the option that is appealing to me most is teaching English abroad.
Okay first of all, it seems to me that there are a lot of jobs out there for a native speaker. Plus I've lived abroad before, I know that I will like Asia. So I have a couple advantages, maybe. And I know I want to travel, and this might be a great opportunity to live abroad, when I am likely the most free. I don't know how much freedom or opportunity I will have in the future, depending on what happens. I should be able to pay off student loans, and hopefully travel. Travel is cheap in Asia, and also closer to Australia, where I have lots of connections that I really want to visit!
Another advantage could be that I would see if I like teaching generally, and if I love it maybe come back and apply for TFA or teaching fellowships with a bit more experience. Or see if I want to do something else. D.C. still appeals to me, maybe some international experience would help me in a job there.
I am especially attracted to Indonesia for some reason, but it is harder to save money there. I would prefer Vietnam, Southern China or Taiwan as far as location. I would like a tropical climate/close to beach or water location. But I dunno, I'm pretty adaptable and willing to try everything.
If someone is thinking about teaching English in Asia, lemme know. Maybe we can go together! If I actually end up doing this, I may need some sort of summer job to make a bit of travel/start-up money- which may result in camp. It's really the only job experience/marketable skill I have at the moment, and it beats minimum wage slavery.
That is all for now. God I have to write a Kant paper this weekend, kill me. Time is going by too fast to get all the stuff done I am supposed to.

Oh Megan Megan Megan!! Do come visit if you are ever down under :)
Good luck with all the teaching fellowships you are applying for. Not really sure I understand what they are, but it sounds like a great experience/job!!
And teaching overseas is totally the way to go! I think that's what I'll be doing first year out of Uni!!
Miss you xox
