One of our huge traditions here at Bryn Mawr is May Day. The festivities began last night, when the seniors leave May Day gifts outside of the underclasswomen's doors. It started as a way to get rid of crap seniors don't want, but some of the gifts have been passed down for years. May Day gifting was definitely my favorite part of May Day this year. It was fun, I picked out gifts for everyone I knew and went around like Santa Claus.
This morning, the Seniors gathered to sing President of the College, J-Mac, awake. Then we headed up to the roof of Rockefeller, my dorm, to attempt to sing in the sun. It was fun, but it didn't work. It was an incredibly rainy day, all day. They said it was the first rainy May Day in 10 years. Next was our Senior breakfast, with strawberries, cream, and champagne. After that, we went to watch the parade, in which J-mac rides in a horse drawn carriage and a couple of my friends marched in since they were Maypole dancers. Maypole dancing was next, and the seniors always win. Then the "humorous" speeches. Our class presidents did a pretty good job but J-Mac's was...awkward. Basically how much Bryn Mawr scares her.
May Hole is probably the most known tradition because I like to tell everyone about it. We cross hands in a giant circle, chanting "hey hey, ho ho, the patriarchy has got to go" and then run into the middle of the circle and fling a parachute covered in flower petals into the air. And dance to Dar Williams. Of course it was pouring rain, but May Hole in the rain was fun. Quote of the day:
Mawrtyrs (singing): I will not be afraid of women, I will not be afraid of women...
Someone's boyfriend: I'm a little afraid of women right now.
Let's be honest though. Any way you cut it a rainy May Day sucks, especially for senior year when you've had three glorious sunny May Days. Laying out in the sun all day just makes you feel so good.
We powered through to step sing, my last ever. It was a huge crowd despite the rain and cold. A lot of crying, especially from the underclasswomen, which was sort of intense.
I'll be posting a few pics on Facebook soon. Also working on a job update, trying to figure all that stuff out...
I can't wait to graduate and get home to sunny Arizona.
