I guess like everyone, I was thinking "Valentine's Day is lame." But I still put on a pink shirt and heart earrings today. I guess it was a reflex. I miss 4th grade when we got a cake for Arizona's birthday AND V-Day candy. Well in honor of Valentine's Day, my top love/anti-love/emo love songs:
Emo: Swing, Swing by The All-American Rejects. Classic. I also have a thing for guy singers who do that falsetto. "Did you think that I would cry/on the phone?" Get me more emo than that.
Has Best Emo Lyric: You're So Last Summer by Taking Back Sunday. "the truth is you could slit my throat/and with my one last gasping breath I'd apologize for bleeding on your shirt"
Cute: Brighter than Sunshine by Aqualung. Awwwww but not too sappy.
Classic: God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. Also in Love Actually.
Blink 182: All the Small Things. Get their own category in honor of their reunion. Middle school dance.
Drunk at Bryn Mawr: Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. No better song to sing passionately with your friends.
Bitter: Seventy times 7 by Brand New. Happy punk tune with this: "Have another drink and drive yourself home/I hope there's ice on all the roads/And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt/and again when your head goes through the windshield."
Epic: The Suffering by Coheed and Cambria. Part of their epic fantasy album. Also in the "wistful" category, a great one for love songs.
Sad acoustic: Cannonball by Damien Rice. Gorgeous Irishman singing this? Yeahhhh.
Infidelity: Screaming Infidelities by Dashboard Confessional. Great song for being depressed and bitter. Hands Down for that perfect moment love song, but not as great as the bitterness.
Song about a love song: Our Song by Taylor Swift. Embarassing to admit you love but irresistable.
Sex song: Threesome by Fenix TX. Listen carefully to those lyrics.
Dance song: Beating Hearts Baby by Head Automatica. Infectious.
Poetic and metaphoric: Slow Hands by Interpol. "I submit my incentive is romance/I watch the pole dance of the stars"
Sweet: Heart of Mine by Peter Salett
Go to hell: Where Have You Been? by Reel Big Fish. "Go to hell" is a lyric, actually.
Stupidity: Fool by Shakira. Old school Shakira.
SO over it: Right Now by SR-71. Man I love this song.
Carpe diem: 4ever by The Veronicas. Not as innocent as its use in tween movies would suggest.
Hopeless: Perfect Situation by Weezer. Mostly the expansive guitar that makes this song.
Disturbing yet fun: Love Me Dead by Ludo. "You're a parasitic, psycho, filthy creature
finger-bangin' my heart"
THE ULTIMATE: Alive with the Glory of Love by Say Anything. If you know me you may know this is my favorite song. Not only does it start with "When I watch you I wanna do you right where you're standing" but it's about love during the Holocaust.
